Professor Shan Suthaharan is collaborating with researchers (ophthalmologists and vision scientists) from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as a co-investigator (UNCG-PI) on this NIH R01 funded research project. It is a sub-award from the University of Pittsburgh and it is funded by the prestigious NIH R01 for the next five years (2020-2025). In this cutting edge research, Professor Suthaharan will contribute to the detection and characterization of biomarkers of aging and age-related macular degeneration through the development of novel computational and intelligent approaches. These approaches will include the smart machine learning models and algorithms for the analysis of multi-spectral and multi-modal retinal images and the segmentation of retinal pigmented epithelial cells, by treating the research domain as a big data analytics and smart machine learning framework.

Congratulations to Professor Suthaharan for this exciting and timely state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research!
